Why You Can’t Think Your Way Into Calm

There’s a specific kind of restlessness that doesn’t respond to insight.

You’re wired. Pent up. Your thoughts keep looping. You try journaling, scrolling, talking it out, reframing it. Nothing lands. Your body stays tight and alert.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing at calming down.
It means your nervous system doesn’t feel safe yet.

Some stress doesn’t live in language. It lives in the body.

When your nervous system detects threat, real or remembered or anticipated, it prioritizes protection over calm. The brain shifts resources away from reflection and perspective. The prefrontal cortex softens. The sympathetic nervous system stays online. Energy mobilizes with nowhere to go.

That’s why insight doesn’t translate into relief.

You can understand exactly what’s happening and still feel wired. Talking, journaling, or thinking harder can even make it worse. That’s biology, not a personal flaw.

In this episode of Cosmic Body Shenanigans, I walk through what’s happening neurologically when your body won’t settle. Why top-down calming fails. Why calm requires safety signals, not commands.

And most importantly, why using your hands instead of your brain can be one of the fastest ways to shift your nervous system.

When you create with your hands, regulation happens from the bottom up. Rhythm, movement, pressure, and sensory input give the vagus nerve the cues it’s been waiting for. The body discharges stored stress without needing interpretation or emotional processing.

This works even if you don’t consider yourself creative.

Art, movement, and expression aren’t about talent. They’re about access. Your nervous system doesn’t care what it looks like. It cares that energy can move.

In the episode, I share a simple drawing prompt and explain how what shows up on the page reflects what your body is asking for in that moment. Not who you are. Not what’s broken. Just data.

Crowding, pressure, repetition, missing body parts, fluidity. All of it tells a story about capacity, overwhelm, protection, and regulation. No image is wrong. Resistance itself is information.

Insight follows regulation, not the other way around.

If you’ve been stuck in your head, feeling restless, buzzy, or on edge, this episode offers a different doorway. One that doesn’t require you to explain yourself or fix anything.

You can watch or listen to the full episode, The Art of Calming a Wired Nervous System, on YouTube or wherever you listen to podcasts. That’s where the full context, nuance, and regulation live.

About Amanda

Former engineer on several NASA projects turned medical intuitive. I work with female college athletes with gut pain that is taking her out of her sport. Along with the unpredictable pain, she’s struggling with depression and her grades are starting to slip. I can scan her body to see what’s wrong, clarify it for her, map the path forward, and land her back in her best condition, back in her happy life, back in the game.
