Why You Feel “Sick” When You're Actually Getting Better

There’s a moment that happens in sensitive bodies most springs.

The exhaustion gets heavier. The emotions sit closer to the surface. Old symptoms you thought you’d cleared start whispering again. And if you’re like most of the people I work with, your first instinct is to panic — to figure out what’s wrong, to reach out to a healthcare provider, to add another supplement to the lineup, to push through harder.

Here is what I want you to hear before you do any of that.

Your body might not be breaking down. It might be completing something.

What Detox Actually Looks Like in a Sensitive Body

Sensitive bodies are high-fidelity systems. They register shifts that other nervous systems miss entirely — seasonal changes, energetic pressure, collective emotional load, cosmic timing. That isn’t a flaw. That’s attunement.

But it also means that when your body begins a clearing cycle — what integrative practitioners sometimes call a healing response — you feel it more intensely than most people do. And because we live in a culture that pathologizes any symptom without a clean lab result, most sensitive people misread detox as illness or even disease.

I went through a particularly rough detox this past season. Actually, I’m still in it as of this writing.

At one point I had to revisit how I felt during Long COVID — that level of bone-deep fatigue, that weight. There was a release of thinking “I’m sick all the time”. It was rough. It was also eye-opening. Because on the other side of it, things that were murky became clear.

My body was doing something. I just had to stop fighting it and embrace my Bruiser mentality, something that I’d put down. Bruiser was one of the 4 types in the Gutsy Chick Quiz (gutsychickquiz.com).

4 Signs Your Body Is Clearing, Not Crashing

Before you spiral, sit with this list.

  1. Exhaustion that doesn’t respond to more sleep.

This is your body redirecting energy inward. Melatonin spikes, cortisol dips — your system is pulling resources toward cellular cleanup. Rest more anyway, but know that this exhaustion has a purpose.

  1. Old symptoms surfacing.

The body doesn’t always clear things in a straight line. Sometimes healing looks like a return before it looks like a release. If something old is showing up, ask what it is completing rather than assuming it is coming back. (This one was a HUGE revelation for me in this last detox.)

  1. Emotional rawness without a clear trigger.

Your nervous system becomes honest during detox cycles. Anything you have been suppressing comes to the surface — not to punish you, but to complete a cycle. Emotions are not the problem. The override is.

  1. Dreams that are more vivid, strange, or intense.

This is your limbic system doing its nighttime processing work. Your dreaming mind is working. Let it.

What Ancient Cultures Understood That We’ve Forgotten

May Day, Beltane, Walpurgis Night, Floralia, and ‘Obby ‘Oss — some of the oldest festivals on Earth — were never just a calendar date (May 1). They were nervous system events. Communities emerged from winter together. They built fires, they danced, they celebrated that they had made it through the dark — not quietly and alone, but together with their bodies moving and their voices loud.

The science behind this isn’t complicated. Your nervous system regulates faster, more completely, and more durably in the presence of other regulated nervous systems. Co-regulation is not a wellness trend. It’s ancient. Your body was designed for it.

And yet most sensitive people are trying to move through the hardest seasons of their health completely alone.

What To Do Right Now

Place one hand on your belly and one hand on your heart. Take a slow breath in, and on the exhale ask your body this: what are you trying to put down right now?

Don’t analyze the answer. Just notice what comes up — a sensation, a word, an image. That’s your body talking. That’s the signal most people override.

If you want support moving through this season without overriding those signals, the Cosmic Sensitive Circle is open now at early bird pricing — $37 per month. It’s the space where sensitive bodies learn to read their own signals, and they do it in community, the way healing was always meant to happen. Early Bird closes May 3. Sign up here.

About Amanda

Former engineer on several NASA projects turned medical intuitive. I work with female college athletes with gut pain that is taking her out of her sport. Along with the unpredictable pain, she’s struggling with depression and her grades are starting to slip. I can scan her body to see what’s wrong, clarify it for her, map the path forward, and land her back in her best condition, back in her happy life, back in the game.
