Stop Overthinking Gratitude — Do This Instead

Most women think they are bad at gratitude. They believe it requires a journal, a ritual, or a perfectly quiet moment before the kids wake up and the emails start flooding in. But that belief is exactly what keeps them from feeling the power gratitude actually holds.

Because gratitude isn’t a task. Gratitude is medicine.
And the research is clear: it boosts immunity, balances hormones, regulates the nervous system, and even softens the electromagnetic field around your heart.

In this episode of the Gutsy Chick Podcast, I’m breaking down how to access those benefits in seconds, not hours. No journaling prompts required. Just a body, a breath, and a moment of presence.

Let’s dive in.

Gratitude Is Not an Emotion — It’s a Biological Event

This is where the science gets fascinating.

Gratitude shifts your physiology almost instantly. The moment you feel appreciation, not think it, your body’s chemistry starts to reorganize itself.

Your brain fires differently.
Your vagus nerve activates.
Cortisol begins to drop.
Your heart rhythm smooths into coherence.

In plain terms: gratitude tells your nervous system, “You are safe.”

And safety is the signal your body needs to begin healing. Stress and gratitude cannot coexist in the body at the same time. Gratitude becomes the antidote, the internal reset button, the doorway back to yourself.

But here’s the key: it only works when you feel it in your body. Warmth in your chest. A deeper breath. The subtle sense of relief. That is the sweet spot where healing begins.

The Three-Second Gratitude Reset

You don’t need a journal. You don’t need a ritual. You need presence.

Here’s the simplest practice I teach:

Step 1: Feel your feet on the ground.
Step 2: Inhale and name one thing that is working in your life right now.
Step 3: Exhale and let that feeling expand in your body.

That’s it.

You have just shifted your physiology, your energy, and your perception. And it takes less time than searching for a pen.

Do it in the carpool line.
While cooking dinner.
Before you answer that stressful email.

Three seconds is enough.

Two Ways to Infuse Gratitude Into Daily Life

Once you learn to feel gratitude in your body, you can weave it into everything you do. These two practices are easy, portable, and deeply regulating.

1. Gratitude Instead of Apologizing

Most apologies are not actually apologies—they are automatic patterns rooted in shame.

Instead of “I’m sorry I’m late,” try:
“Thank you for waiting for me.”

Instead of “Sorry I messed up,” try:
“Thank you for your patience.”

This simple shift rewires your brain toward appreciation, not self-criticism. It changes how you relate to others and how your nervous system relates to you.

2. The Hawaiian Salt Ceremony

This comes from my Shimas and remains one of my favorite micro-rituals.

Take a pinch of sea salt—Hawaiian or Celtic if you have it.

Feel its texture.
Let it dissolve on your tongue.
And hold a single grateful thought as the minerals flow through your body.

With that one moment, you nourish both the physical body (electrolytes, minerals) and the emotional body (gratitude, presence). It blends science and spirit beautifully.

Gratitude in the Middle of the Mess

As the holidays approach, gratitude tends to get packaged as a performance. Be grateful for everything. Love your blessings. Appreciate the chaos.

But the truth is simpler: you do not have to be grateful for everything.
You only need to find gratitude within everything.

When life feels chaotic, look for one sensory anchor:

The warmth of a mug.
The sound of your child’s laughter.
The light stretched across the floor.

These micro-moments tell your nervous system, “I am safe right now.” And when safety returns, your mind clears, your hormones find balance, and you remember who you are.

Your Body Already Knows How to Heal

This Thanksgiving season, stop overthinking gratitude.

Just take three seconds.
Pause.
Breathe.
Notice what’s working.

Swap sorry for thank you.
Add a pinch of salt and a dose of presence.
Let your body feel safe enough to heal.

Because gratitude doesn’t just change your mindset.
It changes your biology.

About Amanda

Former engineer on several NASA projects turned medical intuitive. I work with female college athletes with gut pain that is taking her out of her sport. Along with the unpredictable pain, she’s struggling with depression and her grades are starting to slip. I can scan her body to see what’s wrong, clarify it for her, map the path forward, and land her back in her best condition, back in her happy life, back in the game.
